Em 2014, Angel Bat Dawid reformou-se. Deixou o emprego numa loja de lingerie, levantou o dinheiro da pensão de reforma e usou-o para, durante um ano, se dedicar a tempo inteiro à música. Compositora, clarinetista, pianista, maestra, engenheira de gravação, formadora e DJ, a sua relação com a arte começou aos quatro anos com o filme Amadeus (1984). Encantada com a imagem do jovem Mozart, pediu para tocar violino na banda da escola. Recebeu um clarinete, instrumento que lhe pareceu muito pouco apelativo – isto é, até encontrar na biblioteca a cassete de uma gravação do Concerto para Clarinete (1791). A partir daí, o instrumento de sopro passou a ser o seu melhor amigo.
Durante o ano que tirou para se concentrar na música, começou a frequentar sessões de free jazz e sempre que aparecia uma oportunidade para tocar, mesmo com músicos que não conhecia, aceitava. Enraizada na fervilhante cena de Chicago, tornou-se uma figura de destaque dessa comunidade, indo em digressões com conterrâneos como Jaimie Branch e Ben Lamar Gay. Além disso, somou créditos em trabalhos de Moor Mother, Shabaka Hutchings, Bilal e André 3000.
The Oracle, o disco de estreia, chegou em 2019 com selo da International Anthem. Canalizando a energia cósmica de Sun Ra, Angel Bat Dawid canta e toca praticamente todos os instrumentos deste trabalho, que foi gravando e produzindo pela própria usando principalmente o telemóvel. Amplamente aclamado pela imprensa especializada, The Oracle estabeleceu-a como um nome de proa na música contemporânea centrada na integração da composição clássica, do gospel, do jazz e da improvisação, através de uma perspetiva afrofuturista. Um ano depois lançou LIVE (2020), álbum confrontacional que regista o concerto da norte-americana e da sua banda, Tha Brothahood, no JazzFest Berlin de 2019. Inspirada pelo filme The Cry for Jazz (1959), que alegava que o jazz estava morto, Angel Bat Dawid decidiu fazer uma peça de louvor ao defunto género. Assim nasceu Requiem for Jazz (2023), uma suite de doze movimentos em grande parte gravado ao vivo no festival jazz do Hyde Park de Chicago e que conta com participação de Marshall Allen e Knoel Scott da Sun Ra Arkestra.

In 2014, Angel Bat Dawid retired. She left her job at a lingerie store, withdrew her pension money and used it to dedicate herself full-time to music for a year. A composer, clarinettist, pianist, conductor, recording engineer, educator and DJ, her relationship with art began at the age of four with the film Amadeus (1984). Fascinated by the image of the young Mozart, she asked to play the violin in her school band. She received a clarinet instead, an instrument that seemed rather unappealing to her – that is, until she found a cassette recording of the Clarinet Concerto (1791) in the library. From then on, the wind instrument became her best friend.
During the year she took to focus on music, she began attending free jazz sessions and accepted every opportunity to play, even with musicians she did not know. Rooted in Chicago’s vibrant scene, she became a prominent figure in that community, touring with fellow Chicago musicians such as Jaimie Branch and Ben Lamar Gay. She also contributed to works by Moor Mother, Shabaka Hutchings, Bilal and André 3000.
The Oracle, her debut album, was released in 2019 on International Anthem. Channeling the cosmic energy of Sun Ra, Angel Bat Dawid sings and plays virtually all the instruments on this work, which she recorded and produced herself, using mainly a mobile phone. Widely acclaimed by the specialist press, The Oracle established her as a leading name in contemporary music centred on the integration of classical composition, gospel, jazz and improvisation, through an Afrofuturist perspective. A year later she released LIVE (2020), a confrontational album documenting a concert by the American artist and her band, Tha Brothahood, at JazzFest Berlin in 2019. Inspired by the film The Cry for Jazz (1959), which claimed that jazz was dead, Angel Bat Dawid decided to create a requiem for the deceased genre. Thus Requiem for Jazz (2023) was born, a twelve-movement suite largely recorded live at Chicago’s Hyde Park Jazz Festival, featuring Marshall Allen and Knoel Scott of the Sun Ra Arkestra.
