Um dia acordei com uma voz diferente da minha. Senti-me levantado na selva, havia cheiro e cânticos, um modo de dizer a que não estava acostumado e depois tudo me parecia próximo, o mocho e a árvore, o burrico da menina atravessando o caminho. Havia olho de animal bravo e eu fazia pão do fruto seco e olhava soprar o vento da montanha para ouvir a minha deusa.
Um dia viajei longe às terras vermelhas e à cidade dos livros e um homem sábio ensinou-me as letras e entregou-me as grandes folhas que eu guardo na cabana. Deixo-as à sombra e gosto de desenhar com a luz da candeia as cores que encontro espalhadas no pó e em alguns frutos da selva. Hoje ouvi o canto do pássaro vadio e a minha deusa deixou ficar as palavras.
José Miguel Braga nasceu em 1957, na cidade de Braga. Estudou no Liceu Sá de Miranda e depois na Universidade do Minho. Fez parte dos primeiros alunos da universidade, no Bacharelato em Ensino de Português-Francês. Dedicou-se também à associação académica e ao teatro universitário, na altura chamado TUBRA, teatro universitário de Braga. Iniciou a carreira de professor do Ensino Secundário em Janeiro de 1978 e passou a dedicar-se ao teatro num grupo amador que se dedicava à descentralização teatral e ao estudo de uma forma de expressão do teatro popular. Era o TIP, teatro independente pronto.
Entre 1987 e 1996 viveu em França, onde foi leitor de Português. Regressado a Portugal integrou os primeiros trabalhos do Sindicato de Poesia e depois dedicou-se à investigação do trabalho de actor, com o colectivo PIF’H produções ilimitadas fora d’horas. Entretanto fez o doutoramento, no Departamento de Ciências da Comunicação do ICS da Universidade do Minho, intitulado Aqui é o Mundo – sobre teatro e técnicas de expressão. A partir de 1997, dedicou-se à encenação e à escrita de peças de teatro, sobretudo no período que sucedeu à criação do Curso Profissional de Interpretação, na Escola Secundária Alberto Sampaio. Tem colaborado também com o jovem colectivo de actores profissionais Malad’arte.
Iniciou o Diário em 2008, regressou em 2005 e de 2017 até agora. Foi assistente convidado e depois professor auxiliar convidado do Departamento de Ciências da Comunicação do ICS. Publicou ficção narrativa nas Edições Húmus. Adelita em 2021, Bons Desejos em 2022 e O Caminho de Royat em 2024. Todos os livros anteriores foram apresentados na 100ª Página.

One day I woke up with a voice different from my own. I felt myself rising in the jungle, there were scents and chants, a way of speaking I was not used to, and then everything seemed close to me, the owl and the tree, the little donkey of the girl crossing the path. There was the eye of a wild animal and I made bread from dried fruit and watched the mountain wind blowing so I could hear my goddess.
One day I travelled far to the red lands and to the city of books and a wise man taught me the letters and handed me the large sheets that I keep in the hut. I leave them in the shade and like to draw, by the light of the lamp, the colours I find scattered in the dust and in some fruits of the jungle. Today I heard the song of the wandering bird and my goddess left the words behind.
José Miguel Braga was born in 1957 in the city of Braga. He studied at Liceu Sá de Miranda and later at the University of Minho. He was among the first students of the university, in the Portuguese-French Teaching programme. He was also involved in the academic association and in university theatre, at the time called TUBRA, the University Theatre of Braga. He began his career as a secondary school teacher in January 1978 and later devoted himself to theatre in an amateur group dedicated to theatrical decentralisation and to the study of forms of popular theatre expression. This was TIP, Teatro Independente Pronto.
Between 1987 and 1996 he lived in France, where he worked as a Portuguese language lecturer. After returning to Portugal he joined the first initiatives of Sindicato de Poesia and later devoted himself to research into the work of the actor with the collective PIF’H produções ilimitadas fora d’horas. He later completed a PhD at the Department of Communication Sciences of the ICS at the University of Minho entitled Aqui é o Mundo – sobre teatro e técnicas de expressão. From 1997 onwards he dedicated himself to directing and writing theatre plays, particularly in the period following the creation of the Professional Acting Course at Escola Secundária Alberto Sampaio. He has also collaborated with the young collective of professional actors Malad’arte.
He began the Diário in 2008, returned to it in 2005 and again from 2017 until now. He was a visiting assistant and later a visiting assistant professor at the Department of Communication Sciences of ICS. He has published narrative fiction with Edições Húmus: Adelita in 2021, Bons Desejos in 2022 and O Caminho de Royat in 2024. All previous books were presented at 100ª Página.
