Um dos clássicos do cinema expressionista, O Estudante de Praga aborda o tema do doppelgänger. Balduin é um jovem estudante e exímio esgrimista que, humilhado pela sua pobreza, aceita vender o reflexo a um bruxo. A realização de Henrik Galeen é prodigiosa e uma súmula do cinema alemão da época, com sombras, sobreposições, câmara subjetiva, íris, claro-escuro, numa poderosa e impressionante composição visual.
O duplo pode ser definido ‘um eu simultaneamente outro’: algo que, contrariando as leis da física, não só é possível no Cinema, como é um tema pelo qual o Cinema nutre particular predileção desde os seus primórdios. O Cinema no Pátio apresenta quatro propostas em torno da ideia de outro-eu, entre o presente e o ausente, o reflexo e a distorção, e como todas se ligam a uma imagem da danação: o duplo no cinema quase sempre reflete o maldito, o engano, a perdição.

Eduardo Brito trabalha em cinema, escrita e fotografia. No cinema escreveu e realizou a longa-metragem A Sibila, a partir do romance de Agustina Bessa-Luís. Realizou várias curtas, tais como Penúmbria, Declive e Úrsula. Escreveu o argumento de várias longas de Rodrigo Areias, entre as quais O Pior Homem de Londres. Na fotografia e na escrita, explora os temas verdade-ficção-memória, bem como a relação texto-imagem, como por exemplo nos livros East Ending e Procura Nada. Eduardo tem o mestrado em Estudos Artísticos e Museológicos pela Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade do Porto. Fez especialização em guionismo na Escuela Internacional de Cine y TV, em Cuba. Ensina como assistente convidado, na FBAUP, onde é doutorando em Artes Plásticas, e na FLUP.

One of the classics of expressionist cinema, The Student of Prague explores the theme of the doppelgänger. Balduin is a young student and skilled fencer who, humiliated by his poverty, agrees to sell his reflection to a sorcerer. Henrik Galeen’s direction is remarkable and a synthesis of German cinema of the time, with shadows, superimpositions, subjective camera, iris shots and chiaroscuro, in a powerful and striking visual composition.
The double can be defined as ‘a self that is simultaneously another’: something that, defying the laws of physics, is not only possible in cinema, but has also been a recurring theme since its earliest days. Cinema no Pátio presents four proposals around the idea of the other-self, between presence and absence, reflection and distortion, and how they all connect to an image of damnation: in cinema, the double almost always reflects the cursed, deception and downfall.

Eduardo Brito works across cinema, writing and photography. In cinema, he wrote and directed the feature film A Sibila, based on the novel by Agustina Bessa-Luís. He directed several short films, such as Penúmbria, Declive and Úrsula. He wrote the screenplay for several feature films by Rodrigo Areias, including O Pior Homem de Londres. In photography and writing, he explores themes such as truth-fiction-memory, as well as the relationship between text and image, as seen in books like East Ending and Procura Nada. Eduardo holds a master’s degree in Artistic and Museological Studies from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto. He specialised in screenwriting at the Escuela Internacional de Cine y TV in Cuba. He teaches as a guest assistant at FBAUP, where he is a PhD candidate in Fine Arts, and at FLUP.
