Se achamos que já vimos tudo o que uma guitarra elétrica pode fazer, desenganemo-nos. Ex-Easter Island Head estão cá para provar que há sempre mais vida a nascer das seis cordas. Diretamente da vanguarda de Liverpool, uma cidade historicamente vibrante na música, foram descritos pelo The Guardian como “uma das experiências mais ousadas da música britânica”. Dispostas na horizontal, as suas guitarras (e o seu baixo), são modificadas fisicamente, em vez de carregadas de distorção e efeitos. A banda prepara os instrumentos, insere varas e mecanismos, e usa técnicas estendidas com baquetas, bambu, chaves Allen e até vibrações de telemóvel.
Frequentemente comparados com pioneiros como Glenn Branca, Rhys Chatham, Steve Reich ou John Cage, Ex-Easter Island Head entraram em cena com a trilogia Mallet Guitars (2010, 2012 e 2013), um título sugestivo para a prática que os acompanha desde então. Seguiram-se Large Electric Ensemble (2014) e Twenty-Two Strings (2016). Recentemente, voltaram aos lançamentos com o brilhante e muito aclamado Norther (2024), desta vez adotando o termo meteorológico dos ventos fortes e frios do norte. Este sexto trabalho foi eleito o disco do ano para a revista The Quietus e destacado em praticamente todas as publicações de referência, como The Wire, Pitchfork, Loud and Quiet, The Guardian, Far Out Magazine, New York Times ou Uncut Magazine. Ao longo dos anos, a banda tem-se apresentado em festivais de proa como Le Guess Who?, ATP e Supersonic. Em 2025, acompanhando o grande destaque do LP mais recente, foram convidados por Robert Smith, dos The Cure, a reinterpretar a canção Alone, inserida no álbum Mixes of a Lost World.

If we think we have already seen everything an electric guitar can do, we should think again. Ex-Easter Island Head are here to prove that there is always more life to be drawn from six strings. Directly from the forefront of Liverpool, a city historically vibrant in music, they have been described by The Guardian as “one of the boldest experiments in British music”. Their guitars (and bass), arranged horizontally, are physically modified rather than loaded with distortion and effects. The band prepares the instruments, inserts rods and mechanisms, and uses extended techniques with drumsticks, bamboo, Allen keys and even mobile phone vibrations.
Frequently compared with pioneers such as Glenn Branca, Rhys Chatham, Steve Reich and John Cage, Ex-Easter Island Head emerged with the Mallet Guitars trilogy (2010, 2012 and 2013), a suggestive title for the practice that has accompanied them ever since. This was followed by Large Electric Ensemble (2014) and Twenty-Two Strings (2016). More recently, they returned to releasing music with the brilliant and highly acclaimed Norther (2024), this time adopting the meteorological term for the strong, cold winds from the north. This sixth work was named album of the year by The Quietus and highlighted by virtually all major publications, including The Wire, Pitchfork, Loud and Quiet, The Guardian, Far Out Magazine, New York Times and Uncut Magazine. Over the years, the band has performed at leading festivals such as Le Guess Who?, ATP and Supersonic. In 2025, following the considerable attention surrounding their latest LP, they were invited by Robert Smith of The Cure to reinterpret the song Alone, included on the album Mixes of a Lost World.
