Given his consistent career at the highest level of global jazz over the past three decades, Kurt Rosenwinkel’s presence on the Guimarães Jazz stage has long been overdue. The guitarist and composer will perform at the festival for the first time leading a quintet of outstanding contemporary jazz musicians. In this concert, Rosenwinkel will revisit the album “The Remedy”, the critically acclaimed recording of a 2006 live performance at the renowned New York jazz club The Village Vanguard, featuring a high-calibre jazz group that included the highly regarded musicians Mark Turner on saxophone and Eric Harland on drums.

Kurt Rosenwinkel (USA, 1970) began studying jazz guitar at the age of 12, when he enrolled at the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performative Arts. There, he met other students who would go on to become renowned professional musicians, including jazz bassist Christian McBride and Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, the future drummer of the hip-hop band The Roots, with whom Rosenwinkel would collaborate many years later. The guitarist’s professional career began after he completed his studies at Berklee College of Music, through vibraphonist Gary Burton, who invited him to join a tour. Moving to New York in the mid-1990s allowed Rosenwinkel to broaden his range of collaborations, and the following years were marked by intense activity as a sideman for artists including Paul Motian, Brian Blade, Joe Henderson and Geri Allen. His recording debut as a bandleader came in 1996 with the trio album “East Coast Love Affair”, accompanied by Avishai Cohen and Jorge Rossy. Since then, he has maintained a steady release schedule, always alongside outstanding contemporary jazz musicians (Joshua Redman, Brad Meldhau, Eric Revis and Jeff Ballard, among many others). His most recent release is The Brahms Project, co-led with Swiss pianist Jean-Paul Brodbeck. Kurt Rosenwinkel’s involvement in music extends beyond composition to production and the release of other artists’ work, notably through his own independent label, Heartcore Records.

The musicians accompanying Kurt Rosenwinkel on his Guimarães Jazz debut include pianist Aaron Goldberg and bassist Joe Martin, two original members of the line-up with whom the guitarist recorded “The Remedy”. This album will serve as the theme and starting point for the concert. Replacing Mark Turner and Eric Harland are Seamus Blake on saxophone and Kendrick Scott on drums, two established musicians on today’s New York jazz scene who bring their own musical identities to the reinterpretation of Rosenwinkel’s compositions, which are both cerebral and melodic.
