Peneda-Gerês, Parque Nacional de Portugal

"Tudo começou em 1888, após uma montaria de D. Luís I à cabra-montês, nem sequer muito bem-sucedida, mas que motivou a criação da Mata Nacional, antecessora do atual Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês. Graças a estas iniciativas de conservação, ainda hoje podemos, como el-rei, admirar a paisagem, a fauna e a flora, bem como as marcas ancestrais da ocupação humana deste território de cerca de 69 000 hectares, assentes sobre uma base granítica originária de há cerca de 320 a 290 milhões de anos.
Este livro revela a Peneda-Gerês numa viagem cruzada através da história, da ecologia e da cultura do único parque nacional português. Mais do que um retrato, é um apelo à preservação da riqueza e diversidade de um património que corre o risco de perder a sua identidade cultural e ambiental"
Miguel Brandão Pimenta
Exerceu funções no Instituto da Conservação da Natureza e no Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês, entre outras instituições. É autor de inúmeros trabalhos nesta área, publicados a nível nacional e internacional, entre os quais se destaca o Atlas das Aves do Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês (1996).
Atualmente, dedica-se à reconstrução histórica da fauna em Portugal, a partir de fontes históricas e culturais, sendo coautor dos livros «Urso-pardo em Portugal: Crónica de uma extinção» (2017) e «Feras e Homens: A fauna no Portugal medieval (2022)».

"Everything began in 1888, after a hunting expedition by D. Luís I to the mountain goat, not even a particularly successful one, but which motivated the creation of the National Forest, predecessor of the current Peneda-Gerês National Park. Thanks to these conservation initiatives, we can still today, like the king himself, admire the landscape, fauna and flora, as well as the ancestral marks of human occupation in this territory of around 69,000 hectares, resting on a granitic base formed around 320 to 290 million years ago.
This book reveals Peneda-Gerês through a journey across the history, ecology and culture of Portugal’s only national park. More than a portrait, it is an appeal for the preservation of the richness and diversity of a heritage at risk of losing its cultural and environmental identity."
Miguel Brandão Pimenta
He worked at the Institute for Nature Conservation and at Peneda-Gerês National Park, among other institutions. He is the author of numerous works in this field, published nationally and internationally, among which the Atlas of the Birds of Peneda-Gerês National Park (1996) stands out.
Currently, he is dedicated to the historical reconstruction of fauna in Portugal from historical and cultural sources, being co-author of the books «Brown Bear in Portugal: Chronicle of an Extinction» (2017) and «Beasts and Men: Fauna in Medieval Portugal» (2022).
