Bill Orcutt
Com mais de quarenta anos de carreira, Bill Orcutt segue sempre o caminho que a guitarra lhe aponta. É, indiscutivelmente, um dos nomes mais influentes da música experimental e um dos instrumentistas mais relevantes da atualidade.
Emergiu nos anos 1990 como cofundador dos seminais Harry Pussy, banda que combinava o caos do no wave, a intensidade do hardcore e uma improvisação jazz que evocava Cecil Taylor. Precursores do movimento noise, partilharam digressões com Sonic Youth, Sebadoh, The Dead C e Guided by Voices. Após o fim do projeto, em 1997, Orcutt afastou-se da música durante mais de uma década, regressando a solo com A New Way To Pay Old Debts (2009).
O reconhecimento foi imediato. O disco foi eleito pela The Wire como o terceiro melhor lançamento do ano e, desde então, os elogios multiplicaram-se na imprensa especializada. A Pitchfork descreveu-o como “uma das grandes mentes criativas da história da guitarra”, a NPR afirmou que “ninguém toca guitarra como ele”, o New York Times destacou-o como “um instrumentista que nunca fica pela metade” e a The Wire considerou-o “impressionante e diferente de tudo o que se pode imaginar”. Mais recentemente, lançou Music for Four Guitars (2022), trabalho que lhe valeu comparações a Steve Reich.
Quer toque a velha guitarra acústica Kay ou a elétrica Telecaster — sempre com duas cordas removidas — o som de Bill Orcutt é inconfundível. A cada gravação e performance, continua a reinventar uma linguagem sonora feita de tons crus, minimalismo irregular e improvisação incansável.

With more than forty years of career behind him, Bill Orcutt follows wherever the guitar leads. He is, unquestionably, one of the most influential figures in experimental music and one of the most important instrumentalists of our time.
He emerged in the 1990s as co-founder of the seminal Harry Pussy, a band that fused the chaos of no wave, the intensity of hardcore and a jazz improvisation reminiscent of Cecil Taylor. Pioneers of the noise movement, they toured with Sonic Youth, Sebadoh, The Dead C and Guided by Voices. After the project ended in 1997, Orcutt stepped away from music for over a decade, returning solo with A New Way To Pay Old Debts (2009).
Recognition was immediate. The album was named the third best release of the year by The Wire, and since then critical acclaim has continued to grow. Pitchfork described him as “one of the great creative minds in the history of the guitar,” NPR stated that “no one plays guitar like him,” the New York Times highlighted him as “an instrumentalist who never does anything halfway,” and The Wire called him “stunning and unlike anything one could imagine.” More recently, he released Music for Four Guitars (2022), a work that drew comparisons to Steve Reich.
Whether playing his old Kay acoustic guitar or an electric Telecaster — always with two strings removed — Bill Orcutt’s sound is unmistakable. With each recording and performance, he continues to reinvent a sonic language built from raw tones, irregular minimalism and relentless improvisation.
