'sings again' com mestrado em media arts u.minho
Will Samson está morto. Foram estas as palavras que ressoaram durante seis horas numa cerimónia de ayahuasca, em abril de 2024. Depois de muitos anos de investigação e ponderação, Will Samson participou nesta tradição praticada pelos povos da Amazónia há centenas de anos. Longe da romantização ocidental desta prática, para o britânico – com raízes no Chile e no Bengal ocidental, e a infância passada na Austrália – esta experiência foi bastante sombria e aterradora. Entre visões, lembra conversas com o seu falecido pai, memórias de infância e o momento em que é levado ao próprio funeral. Com discos lançados com selo da Wichita Recordings ou 12k e concertos ao lado de Ólafur Arnalds, Kurt Vile ou Efterklang, Samson dedica-se a investigar os espaços entre a folk e a eletrónica. A sua música tem um lado quase espiritual, manifestado anteriormente em Active Imagination (2022). Esta espiritualidade ganha uma nova dimensão após o ritual psicadélico a que se submeteu.
A recuperação e incorporação do que viveu estenderam-se ao longo de um ano e meio. Isolado numa vila alentejana, Samson escreveu e gravou um novo álbum enraizando-se em sons orgânicos de ramos, rochas, pincéis e copos de vidro. As tape machines, que o acompanham há vários anos, regressam para fazer a ponte entre o acústico e o eletrónico. As letras, outrora enigmáticas, cantam agora uma visão crua e vulnerável de si mesmo. E assim nasce Sings Again (2026), disco editado a 22 de maio e que é apresentado ao ar livre, no pátio exterior, num concerto com visuais preparados pelos estudantes do Mestrado em Media Arts da Universidade do Minho.

Will Samson is dead. These were the words that echoed for six hours during an ayahuasca ceremony in April 2024. After many years of research and consideration, Will Samson took part in this tradition practiced by Amazonian peoples for hundreds of years. Far from the Western romanticization of this practice, for the British artist – with roots in Chile and West Bengal, and a childhood spent in Australia – this experience was deeply dark and unsettling. Between visions, he recalls conversations with his late father, childhood memories, and the moment he is taken to his own funeral. With records released on labels such as Wichita Recordings or 12k and concerts alongside Ólafur Arnalds, Kurt Vile or Efterklang, Samson explores the space between folk and electronic music. His work carries an almost spiritual dimension, previously expressed in Active Imagination (2022). This spirituality takes on a new meaning following the psychedelic ritual he underwent.
The recovery and integration of what he experienced extended over a year and a half. Isolated in a village in Alentejo, Samson wrote and recorded a new album, grounding himself in organic sounds of branches, rocks, brushes and glass objects. The tape machines, which have accompanied him for several years, return to bridge the acoustic and the electronic. The lyrics, once enigmatic, now express a raw and vulnerable vision of himself. And so Sings Again (2026) is born, an album released on May 22 and presented outdoors, in the exterior courtyard, in a concert with visuals prepared by students from the Master’s in Media Arts at the University of Minho.
