As páginas web com links fantasma, os vídeos pouco populares no YouTube, as diversas imagens que compõem os conjuntos de dados de aprendizagem automática são espaços digitais opacos a que o olho humano tem pouco acesso, mas que podem estar repletas de visualidade. A matéria escura digital é a hipótese levantada relativa a estes dados inertes no seio de vastas e complexas infraestruturas digitais. À semelhança do conceito homónimo da astrofísica, a sua existência pode ser inferida pela ausência. Este conteúdo existe como uma espécie de matéria paralisada que pode afetar a construção global da cultura digital, embora possa nunca ter sido vista por seres humanos.
Matéria Escura Digital explora este conceito, especulando sobre o que pode estar na sua composição e sobre o que nos poderá revelar sobre as lacunas não visuais dos sistemas computacionais. A viver em Portugal, o trabalho de Rosemary Lee foca-se na tecnologia e na forma como o discurso à sua volta é influenciado por tendências do passado. Debatendo aspetos da cultura digital que moldam a realidade contemporânea, a sua nova exposição analisa a operacionalização da visão que se tem manifestado nos avanços da inteligência artificial generativa. Esta obra convida-nos a refletir sobre as forças intangíveis que podem influenciar as tecnologias avançadas e quais as implicações que isso pode ter para a cultura visual. A 12 de dezembro, a artista norte-americana apresenta a investigação por detrás do tema desta exposição numa masterclass promovida pelo Circuito.

Web pages with ghost links, unpopular YouTube videos, and the various images that make up machine learning datasets are opaque digital spaces to which the human eye has little access, but which may be filled with visuality. Digital dark matter is the hypothesis raised regarding this inert data within vast and complex digital infrastructures. Similar to the homonymous concept in astrophysics, its existence can be inferred through absence. This content exists as a kind of paralysed matter that may affect the global construction of digital culture, although it may never have been seen by human beings.
Matéria Escura Digital explores this concept, speculating on what may constitute it and what it might reveal about the non-visual gaps in computational systems. Living in Portugal, Rosemary Lee’s work focuses on technology and the way the discourse surrounding it is influenced by trends from the past. Discussing aspects of digital culture that shape contemporary reality, her new exhibition analyses the operationalisation of vision that has manifested itself in advances in generative artificial intelligence. This work invites us to reflect on the intangible forces that may influence advanced technologies and the implications this may have for visual culture. On 12 December, the American artist presents the research behind the theme of this exhibition in a masterclass promoted by Circuito.
