Tortoise emergiu da cena musical de Chicago no início da década de 1990, com uma formação central composta por John McEntire (bateria e produção), Douglas McCombs (baixo) e Dan Bitney (bateria e percussão). Esta inusitada configuração de bateria dupla tornou-se um dos elementos mais distintivos da sua sonoridade. Considerada uma das bandas mais influentes das últimas três décadas, Tortoise são pioneiros do movimento pós-rock, termo que ajudaram a definir ao fundir géneros como o krautrock, o jazz de vanguarda e o minimalismo. Ao longo do tempo, a formação expandiu-se, incluindo músicos como o guitarrista Jeff Parker e Casey Rice, consolidando a sua reputação como banda de culto.
Álbuns de referência como Millions Now Living Will Never Die (1996) e TNT (1998) são considerados marcos da música instrumental contemporânea. Após quase uma década de silêncio, a banda regressa com Touch, o seu oitavo álbum, com lançamento agendado para 24 de outubro de 2025. O disco, que já apresentou os singles “Oganesson” e “Layered Presence”, será o primeiro editado pela International Anthem.
O virtuosismo dos seus músicos é particularmente evidente em concerto, com a Rolling Stone a considerá-los “fenomenais ao vivo” e a Pitchfork a descrever as suas atuações como “abertas a todo o tipo de possibilidades sónicas”. Este é um regresso muito aguardado a Portugal, marcado para abril de 2026, com concertos no Theatro Circo e na Culturgest.

Tortoise emerged from Chicago’s music scene in the early 1990s, with a core line-up featuring John McEntire (drums and production), Douglas McCombs (bass) and Dan Bitney (drums and percussion). Their unusual dual-drummer configuration became one of the most distinctive elements of their sound. Regarded as one of the most influential bands of the past three decades, Tortoise are pioneers of the post-rock movement — a term they helped define by blending genres such as krautrock, avant-garde jazz and minimalism. Over time, the line-up expanded to include musicians such as guitarist Jeff Parker and Casey Rice, solidifying their reputation as a cult band.
Seminal albums such as Millions Now Living Will Never Die (1996) and TNT (1998) are considered landmarks in instrumental music. After nearly a decade of silence, the band returns with Touch, their eighth album, scheduled for release on 24 October 2025. Featuring the singles “Oganesson” and “Layered Presence”, the record will be their first released through International Anthem.
The virtuosity of its members is especially evident live, with Rolling Stone describing them as “phenomenal live” and Pitchfork praising their performances as “open to all kinds of sonic possibilities”.
